Headquarters for cider makers

A discerningly simple new build headquarters for Brothers Drinks in Somerset ingeniously minimises the company’s impact on the environment by re-using rejected heat from the manufacturing process. Not just hot air, the scheme means the new building, the factory and the neighbouring school’s swimming pool are all heated for free.

The building is sited within a mixture of architectural styles and forms, including a 70s shed and a listed Victorian brewery. The clean, rational design sets out to contrast with its location with a cool brick and glass façade appearing suspended from the solidity of the concrete frame surround. Exterior finishes of brick, steel and painted render are inspired by the industrial, functional nature of the site.

The three-storey steel frame structure connects to the existing factory, hugging the steep bank to the front. The first floor entrance up a staircase of raw concrete is for all office and factory staff creating a single entry point to the complex. An open plan interior provides 400 sq metres of office space on two floors, with views over the surrounding countryside. Covered parking area at ground floor level also provides space for potential future office expansion.

To complement the effective method for heating the office in winter, the energy efficient building does not require an air-conditioning system for the hot summer months. The north facing aspect and vast sliding doors, with indiscernible internal glass balustrades, provide ample ventilation.
