King Alfred School studio complete

A new flexible studio for King Alfred School, primarily for upper school pupils for health and fitness but adaptable for other events and activities.

The building is designed, to be both individual and to sit alongside the collection of existing school buildings, with a distinctive exterior clad in vertical larch battens. Natural ventilation is concealed behind the façade allowing air to flow between the battens and into the building. Full height glazing with large sliding doors is to the front elevation only with additional natural light from a series of roof lights.

A three-phase construction programme was planned around the school holidays to minimise disruption. As site access was restricted, a lightweight timber frame provided the perfect structural solution. Design and construction was to a fixed budget with the construction undertaken by the school’s contractor. Each component part of the building was detailed to enable a quick and easy construction using a team of just two craftsmen.

The simple design connects with its environment and provides a focal point and adaptable space for the whole school to enjoy.
