Tan Home has a high thermal mass, a river source heat pump and roof mounted solar panels provide heating and hot water services for the building and the adjoining commercial kitchen of the Waterside Inn. The river source heat pump can be inverted to cool the building. A building management system automatically operates the roof light to passively cool the building when required. Simple architectural devices, such as louvered windows, were incorporated to reduce solar gain but maximise natural light and provide cross ventilation. There is a flood storage void below the building.
